Everest Base Camp Trek Day 8: Lobuche to Gorak Shep and Base Camp

Day 8 brings one of the most anticipated moments of the Everest Base Camp trek. You walk from Lobuche to Gorak Shep, continue to Everest Base Camp, then return to Gorak Shep for the night. It is a long day at high altitude, with rocky ground and changing mountain weather, so a steady pace matters more than speed.

From Lobuche to Gorak Shep

Leaving Lobuche, the trail follows the upper Khumbu valley through an increasingly rugged landscape. The route crosses uneven ground and glacial moraine, with views towards the Khumbu Glacier and the peaks around it.

Gorak Shep is the final overnight settlement on the usual route to Everest Base Camp. After arriving, you can stop at your lodge, eat and prepare for the walk to Base Camp. Carry water, a warm layer and anything you will need before returning later in the day.

The walk to Everest Base Camp

From Gorak Shep, the path continues over rocky moraine towards Everest Base Camp. The terrain can be tiring even where the gradient is gentle. Watch your footing, stay with your guide and allow enough time for the return walk.

Walking time varies with trail conditions, weather and the group’s pace. Your guide will decide when to turn back if conditions or daylight make continuing unwise.

Arriving at Everest Base Camp

Reaching Everest Base Camp is a memorable achievement. You are close to the Khumbu Glacier and surrounded by a dramatic high mountain landscape. During the climbing season, expedition activity may be visible; at other times, the area can look quite different.

The glacier and its surroundings change, so signs, photo spots and the exact approach can change too. Follow your guide’s directions and keep away from unstable ground.

Base Camp gives you a close experience of the Everest climbing environment, but it is not the best viewpoint for the summit of Everest. The walk up Kala Patthar, usually planned separately, offers the better-known mountain panorama.

Returning to Gorak Shep

After spending time at Base Camp, retrace the route to Gorak Shep. Save energy for this return: walking back over the moraine can feel demanding after a full day on the trail. Once at the lodge, change into warm clothing, have a meal and rest.

Tell your guide promptly if you feel unwell. The overnight stay at Gorak Shep is at a higher altitude than Lobuche, and your condition matters when planning the next morning.

Day 8 combines a challenging walk with the reward of reaching Everest Base Camp. Take time to appreciate the glacier landscape while following your guide’s pace and decisions throughout the day.
