Day 9 begins at Gorak Shep with an optional early climb to Kala Patthar, one of the best-known viewpoints on the Everest Base Camp trek. After returning to the lodge for breakfast, you descend past Lobuche and Thukla to spend the night in Pheriche. It is a long day, so the start time and viewpoint walk should suit the weather and how you feel.
View from Kala Pathhar
The trail rises steeply above Gorak Shep towards Kala Patthar, reaching approximately 5,550 metres at the viewpoint. In clear conditions, the climb offers views of Everest, Nuptse, Pumori and the surrounding peaks. It is the viewpoint many trekkers hope to see after visiting Everest Base Camp the previous day.
An early start can mean cold temperatures and uneven ground before daylight. Carry a headlamp, wear warm layers and follow your guide’s pace. You can enjoy excellent views from partway up if reaching the highest point is not suitable for you that morning.

Kala Patthar provides a different experience from Everest Base Camp. From here, you can look towards Everest and the Khumbu Icefall, while the terrain around Gorak Shep spreads out below. Clouds can obscure the mountains at any hour, so a clear panorama or sunrise cannot be guaranteed. Nepal Tourism Board also identifies Kala Patthar as the popular viewpoint above Gorak Shep for photographing Everest.
Take time to enjoy the scene, then descend carefully to Gorak Shep. The loose, rocky trail deserves attention, especially if you are tired from the ascent.

After breakfast and collecting your belongings, begin the descent towards Lobuche. You then continue past the memorials above Thukla and down to the village. This stretch follows familiar ground from the ascent, but the mountains and valleys look different in the opposite direction.
Stop for food or tea as needed. Although you are heading to a lower overnight altitude, there is still a considerable walk ahead, so keep a comfortable pace.

Beyond Thukla, the route continues down the valley to Pheriche. The village sits in an open mountain setting beneath Tawache and nearby peaks. Settle into your lodge, change into warm clothing and rest after the early start and long descent.
The Kala Patthar climb and walk to Pheriche bring together two sides of the trek: a high viewpoint over the Everest region and the beginning of the journey back through the Khumbu. Your guide can adjust the morning plan if conditions make the climb unsuitable.
