The first trekking day of the Everest Base Camp journey takes you from the excitement of a mountain flight to the quiet trails of the Khumbu. After landing in Lukla, you begin walking through villages, past prayer walls and across suspension bridges before spending your first night in Phakding.
The walk is relatively short, giving you time to settle into the rhythm of the trek. It is also your first chance to see how people live and travel along the route to Everest Base Camp.
For many travelers, the flight to Lukla is one of the most memorable parts of the Everest Base Camp Trek. On a clear day, the aircraft passes over hills and deep valleys, with views toward the Himalayas as it approaches Tenzing–Hillary Airport.
Flights depend heavily on mountain weather. Your departure airport may also vary according to seasonal flight arrangements. Vista Treks will confirm the airport, departure time and required ground transfer before your trek begins. It is wise to keep your first day flexible in case the flight is delayed.
After landing in Lukla, you will meet the porter team, organize your bags and have time for a meal or tea before setting off on foot.

Starting point: Lukla, approximately 2,840 m
Overnight stop: Phakding, approximately 2,610 m
Walking time: Usually 3–4 hours
The trail out of Lukla passes through small settlements and farmland before gradually descending toward the Dudh Koshi valley. Although the trek ultimately climbs to Everest Base Camp, this first stage finishes at a lower elevation than Lukla.
Along the way, you pass villages such as Chheplung and Ghat. Prayer flags, mani walls and small monasteries offer an introduction to the Buddhist traditions of the Khumbu. You may also share the path with local residents, porters and pack animals carrying supplies between villages. Give loaded animals room to pass, especially on narrow sections of trail.
The route crosses streams and suspension bridges, with occasional views of forested slopes and surrounding peaks when the weather is clear. There is no need to rush. A comfortable pace lets you enjoy the scenery and adjust after the flight.

Phakding sits beside the Dudh Koshi River and is a common overnight stop on the Everest Base Camp route. Its lodges offer a place to rest, eat and prepare for the longer walk to Namche Bazaar the following day.
Once you arrive, your guide will help you settle into the lodge and explain the next day’s route. Drink water regularly, eat a good dinner and keep warm in the evening. Although Phakding is lower than Lukla, you are already above 2,500 metres, so tell your guide if you feel unwell.
Day one brings together several experiences that define the Everest Base Camp trek: the flight into the mountains, your first steps on the Khumbu trail, village life and a night in a trekking lodge. It is an introduction to the region rather than a test of speed.
After a restful night in Phakding, the trail continues along the Dudh Koshi River toward Monjo and the climb to Namche Bazaar.
