Trip Overview

Everest Base Camp Trek 14 Days

Walk through the heart of Nepal’s Khumbu region to Everest Base Camp, following the classic trail from Lukla through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche and Lobuche. This 14-day Everest Base Camp trek combines Himalayan scenery, Sherpa culture and two planned acclimatization days before reaching Everest Base Camp at 5,364 metres and hiking Kala Patthar at about 5,550 metres.

The journey passes through Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and offers close views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Pumori and the Khumbu Glacier. No climbing or technical mountaineering experience is required, but the high altitude, cold conditions and long walking days make this a demanding trek.

Vista Treks operates this trip with a licensed trekking guide and porter support. The package begins and ends in Kathmandu and includes domestic flights, trekking permits, lodge accommodation and meals on the trail. Private departures and customized itineraries are available for travelers who want a slower pace, extra buffer days or upgraded accommodation. If you are looking for a more comfortable option, you may also consider our 12-day Everest Base Camp Luxury Trek.

Why Choose This 14 Day Itinerary

A successful Everest Base Camp trek depends more on steady acclimatization than speed. This program includes rest and acclimatization days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, where short hikes help the body adjust before sleeping higher. The itinerary still requires good fitness, but it avoids the rushed approach used by some shorter programs. We strongly recommend keeping at least one or two additional nights in Nepal after the scheduled trek because mountain weather can delay Lukla flights.

Trip Itinerary

  • Welcome to Nepal. A Vista Treks representative will meet you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu. After you have settled in, meet your guide for a trek briefing and equipment check. Depending on your arrival time, the briefing may take place at your hotel or at the Vista Treks office in Thamel.

    Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu
    Meals: Not included

  • Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
    Walking distance: Approximately 6–8 km

Take a morning flight to Lukla, weather permitting. After landing, meet the porter team and begin your trek through villages and farmland along the Dudh Koshi valley. The trail passes prayer walls and small settlements before descending to Phakding, your first overnight stop in the Khumbu.

Lukla flight note: Depending on the season and flight arrangements, the flight may depart from Kathmandu or Manthali Airport in Ramechhap. If Manthali is used, Vista Treks will arrange the required road transfer and confirm the departure details before your trek.

    Accommodation: Trekking lodge or teahouse
    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Walking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
    Walking distance: Approximately 10–12 km

Follow the Dudh Koshi River through villages and across suspension bridges. At Monjo, your guide will handle the entry formalities for Sagarmatha National Park. Continue to Jorsalle, a convenient lunch stop before the main climb.

After crossing the high suspension bridge commonly known as Hillary Bridge, ascend through forest toward Namche Bazaar. On a clear day, you may catch your first glimpse of Mount Everest along the way. The final climb is demanding, so take it at a steady pace.

    Accommodation: Trekking lodge or teahouse
    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Spend a second night in Namche to help your body adjust to the altitude. Weather and health permitting, take a walk above town toward a viewpoint near Syangboche, Hotel Everest View or Khumjung. The hotel area, at approximately 3,880 m, can offer views of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam when skies are clear.

Your guide will choose the route and turnaround point according to the group’s condition. Return to Namche for the night and enjoy time to explore the town or rest at the lodge.

    Accommodation: Trekking lodge or teahouse
    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Walking time: Approximately 5–6 hours
    Walking distance: Approximately 9–11 km

Follow a hillside trail with views toward Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam when the weather is clear. Descend to the river near Phunki Tenga, then climb through pine and rhododendron forest to Tengboche.

If the monastery is open to visitors, you may have time to visit it after arriving. Depending on lodge availability, your overnight stop may be in Tengboche or nearby Deboche.

    Accommodation: Trekking lodge or teahouse
    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Walking time: Approximately 5–6 hours
    Walking distance: Approximately 9–11 km

Descend through forest to Deboche, cross the Imja River and continue through Pangboche. As you gain altitude, the trees give way to a more open landscape. Follow the valley toward Dingboche, with views of Ama Dablam along the route.

Take your time on the ascent and tell your guide if you feel unwell. You will spend two nights in Dingboche.

    Accommodation: Trekking lodge or teahouse
    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Take a gradual acclimatization hike above Dingboche toward the Nangkartshang viewpoint. As you climb, the views open toward the surrounding valleys and peaks, potentially including Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Makalu and Island Peak in clear weather.

Your guide will select a suitable turnaround point based on the weather, trail conditions and how the group feels. There is no need to reach a summit for the walk to serve its acclimatization purpose. Descend to Dingboche for a second night.

    Accommodation: Trekking lodge or teahouse
    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Walking time: Approximately 4–6 hours
    Walking distance: Approximately 7–9 km

Walk gradually uphill across the broad valley above Pheriche toward Thukla, also called Dughla. After a break, climb the steeper path past memorials dedicated to climbers and others who have lost their lives in the mountains.

Continue along the moraine to Lobuche. The altitude is now significant, so maintain a comfortable pace and let your guide know about any symptoms.

    Accommodation: Trekking lodge or teahouse
    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Walking time: Approximately 7–8 hours in total
Walking distance: Approximately 11–13 km in total

Follow the rocky trail beside the Khumbu Glacier to Gorak Shep. After checking into your lodge and taking a break, continue across uneven glacial terrain toward Everest Base Camp.

Spend time at the base camp viewpoint, beside the Khumbu Glacier, before retracing your steps to Gorak Shep. Expedition activity may be visible during the climbing season, but conditions and access vary. Everest itself is largely obscured from base camp; Kala Patthar offers the better close view.

Accommodation: Trekking lodge or teahouse in Gorak Shep
    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Walking time: Approximately 6–8 hours in total
Walking distance: Approximately 13–16 km in total

If the weather and your health permit, start early for the climb to Kala Patthar. The viewpoint offers a panorama of Everest, Nuptse, Pumori and the Khumbu Glacier. Sunrise views are possible when conditions are clear.

Descend to Gorak Shep, collect your belongings and retrace the trail past Lobuche and Thukla. Continue down to Pheriche, where you will spend the night at a considerably lower altitude.

    Accommodation: Trekking lodge or teahouse
    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Walking time: Approximately 6–7 hours
    Walking distance: Approximately 13–15 km

Descend through the valley toward Pangboche and continue past Deboche and Tengboche. After crossing the river near Phunki Tenga, climb back to the hillside trail leading to Namche Bazaar.

Enjoy the return to the town’s cafés and shops. A hot shower may be available at your lodge for an additional charge.

    Accommodation: Trekking lodge or teahouse
    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Walking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
    Walking distance: Approximately 17–19 km

Descend from Namche and follow the Dudh Koshi valley through Monjo and Phakding. Cross familiar suspension bridges and pass through villages you saw at the start of the trek. A final series of uphill sections brings you back to Lukla.

Spend the evening with your guide and porter team and enjoy your last night in the Khumbu.

    Accommodation: Trekking lodge or teahouse
    Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Take a morning flight from Lukla, subject to weather and flight availability. Depending on the operating route, you will arrive in Kathmandu or fly to Manthali and continue to Kathmandu by road. Vista Treks will arrange the scheduled transfer to your hotel.

The remainder of the day is free to rest, explore Kathmandu or shop for souvenirs. Lukla flights can be delayed, so we recommend allowing one or two additional days in Nepal before your international departure whenever possible.

    Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu
Meals: Breakfast during the trek; other meals in Kathmandu are not included

  • Vista Treks will arrange your transfer from the hotel to Tribhuvan International Airport in time for your international flight. If your flight departs later in the day, you may have free time in Kathmandu before leaving for the airport.

Everest Base Camp Trek 14 Days

Useful Info

Accommodation & Meals On The Everest Base Camp Trek.

In Kathmandu, the package uses a comfortable hotel in or near Thamel on a twin-sharing basis. The confirmed hotel category and meal plan will be shown in your quotation. Single rooms can be requested for an additional charge.

During the trek, accommodation is in locally operated lodges or teahouses. Rooms are simple and usually have two single beds. Private bathrooms may be available at lower elevations for an extra charge, but shared toilets are common higher on the route. Rooms are generally not heated; dining rooms may be heated in the evening. At Gorakshep and other busy high-altitude stops, facilities and room availability are limited.

The trekking package includes three meals a day from lodge menus. Common choices include dal bhat, soup, noodles, rice, potatoes, pasta, MoMo, eggs, porridge, pancakes and Tibetan bread. Vegetarian food is widely available, and vegan or special dietary requirements should be shared before booking. Food choices become simpler and more expensive at higher elevations. For hygiene and sustainability, we generally recommend vegetarian meals and treated or boiled water rather than meat and single-use plastic bottles.

Difficulty, Fitness and Preparation

The Everest Base Camp trek is challenging because it reaches extreme altitude and involves repeated walking days on rough, uneven terrain. Most days require four to seven hours of walking, and the base camp and return days can be longer. No ropes, crampons or technical climbing skills are normally needed on the standard route, but snow or ice can change trail conditions.

Begin regular training at least eight to twelve weeks before departure. Build up to long walks on consecutive days, include hills or stairs, and carry the daypack you plan to use. Strength work for the legs and core, together with aerobic exercise, will improve comfort. Previous trekking experience is helpful but not compulsory. Anyone with a heart, lung, blood pressure or other medical condition should consult a qualified medical professional before booking and tell Vista Treks about relevant conditions or medicines.

Altitude and Safety

Altitude illness can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness. Common warning signs include persistent headache, nausea, unusual fatigue, dizziness, poor coordination, breathlessness at rest or a worsening cough. Do not hide symptoms. Tell the guide immediately. The correct response may include rest, stopping the ascent or descending; medication must never be used to force a continued ascent against medical or guide advice.

Our itinerary includes two acclimatization days, and the guide controls the pace and monitors the group. Trekkers should drink regularly, avoid excessive alcohol, eat well and walk slowly. In a serious emergency, the team will coordinate descent, medical advice and evacuation where possible. Rescue costs are the traveler’s responsibility and should be covered by suitable insurance.

Permits and Travel Insurance

The standard route requires entry permissions for Sagarmatha National Park and the Khumbu local area. Vista Treks arranges the permits included in the package and will request the necessary passport details and photographs. Requirements and fees can change, so the final inclusions should be reconfirmed at booking.

Travel insurance is mandatory. The policy should specifically cover trekking up to at least 5,500 metres, medical treatment, trip disruption and emergency helicopter evacuation in Nepal. Confirm the altitude limit and claims procedure directly with the insurer, and carry both digital and printed policy details. A credit card or other means of guaranteeing emergency costs may be required because rescue providers do not always accept an insurance policy alone.

Best Time for the Everest Base Camp Trek

Season Typical Conditions What to Expect
Spring March to May Generally stable trekking weather; warmer lower valleys; colder nights at altitude. Popular season, blooming rhododendrons and expedition activity near base camp.
Autumn late September to November Often clear, dry weather with good mountain visibility. Popular season; busy trails and lodges, especially in October.
Winter December to February Cold, especially above Namche; snow and flight disruption are possible. Quieter trail, but stronger cold-weather preparation and flexibility are needed.
Monsoon June to early September Cloud, rain, slippery lower trails and a higher chance of flight disruption. Fewer trekkers; mountain views can be limited and leeches occur at lower elevations.

Mountain weather is unpredictable in every season. Temperatures vary by elevation, wind and cloud cover, and high-altitude nights can fall well below freezing. Ask Vista Treks for a season-specific packing recommendation before departure.

Lukla Flights and Buffer Days

Flights to Lukla operate only when weather and visibility meet aviation requirements. Delays and cancellations can occur even in the main trekking seasons. Depending on the season and airport congestion, flights may operate from Kathmandu or another airport reached by road. The final arrangement will be confirmed close to departure.

Keep at least one or two buffer days in Nepal after the trek and avoid booking a tight same-day international connection. If a scheduled flight is cancelled, Vista Treks will assist with rebooking and discuss available alternatives. Any helicopter option, additional transport, accommodation or meals not included in the original itinerary will be charged separately unless the confirmed quotation states otherwise.

Packing Essentials

  • Broken-in waterproof trekking boots, trekking socks and comfortable lodge footwear.
  • Moisture-wicking base layers, trekking trousers and warm mid-layers.
  • Insulated down jacket and waterproof, windproof outer jacket and trousers.
  • Warm hat, sun hat, insulated gloves and neck protection.
  • Four-season sleeping bag suitable for sub-zero nights.
  • Daypack, duffel bag, trekking poles and headlamp with spare batteries.
  • Sunglasses with strong UV protection, sunscreen and lip balm.
  • Two reusable water bottles or hydration system plus a reliable purification method.
  • Personal medicines, basic toiletries and a small personal first-aid supply.
  • Passport copies, insurance details, emergency contacts and some Nepalese rupees.
  • Porter weight limits apply. Vista Treks will confirm the allowed duffel weight before the trek; carry valuables, water, rain gear, warm layers and personal medicines in your own daypack.

Responsible Trekking

Carry a refillable bottle and use safe water treatment to reduce plastic waste. Stay on established trails, take all non-biodegradable waste out, and respect wildlife and protected areas. Walk clockwise around mani walls and chortens, ask before photographing people, and dress respectfully when entering monasteries. Use water and energy carefully because fuel and supplies are difficult to transport at altitude.

Trip FAQ's

This package is 14 days from arrival in Kathmandu to final departure. It includes 11 trekking days, two of which are acclimatization days, plus the return flight from Lukla. We can customize the itinerary for faster or slower-paced trekkers according to their requirements.

It is a challenging high-altitude trek. You should be able to walk for five to seven hours on consecutive days and manage longer days on rough terrain. No technical climbing experience is normally required.

A fit and well-prepared first-time trekker can complete the route, but prior multi-day hiking experience is valuable. Beginners may benefit from a longer itinerary with more buffer and acclimatization time.

The optional Kala Patthar hike reaches approximately 5,545 metres. Everest Base Camp is at 5,364 metres, and the highest overnight stop is Gorak Shep at approximately 5,164 metres.

Everest is largely hidden by surrounding peaks from the base camp viewpoint. Kala Patthar provides the classic close view of Everest and the surrounding Khumbu mountains.

A licensed guide provides navigation, logistical support, local knowledge and essential help with altitude and emergencies. Porter support reduces fatigue and helps you keep a steady pace. Vista Treks includes both in this package.

Many lodges offer paid Wi-Fi and device charging, but service becomes less reliable and more expensive at higher elevations. Carry a power bank and keep essential documents available offline.

Hot showers are usually available for an additional charge, particularly at lower elevations. Private bathrooms are limited higher on the route, where shared toilets are standard.

Carry enough Nepalese rupees for drinks, water, showers, charging, Wi-Fi, snacks and tips. ATMs are available in Namche but can be unreliable; do not depend on them for all trekking expenses.

Vista Treks will assist with the next available scheduled flight and explain alternative transport or helicopter options. Extra costs depend on the cause, availability and your insurance coverage.

Yes. The trip can be arranged privately and adapted with extra acclimatization or buffer days, upgraded accommodation, a helicopter return or extensions to Gokyo and Cho La, subject to season and safety.

Contact Vista Treks with your preferred dates, group size and any special requirements. The company will send a current quotation, confirm availability and provide the booking and payment terms.
