Trip FAQ's

Indra Jatra is one of Kathmandu’s biggest street festivals, celebrated in honor of Indra, the god of rain and heaven, and includes rituals, masked dances, and the grand procession of the living goddess Kumari.

The festival falls in September, starting on the 12th day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month Bhadra. Dates vary each year according to the lunar calendar.

The heart of the celebration is Kathmandu Durbar Square, where large crowds gather to watch chariot processions, dances, and ceremonial displays.

You’ll witness cultural performances like the Lakhey and Pulukisi masked dances, see sacred images and relics on display, and experience vibrant public gatherings and processions.

The Kumari is a pre-pubescent girl revered as a living deity. During Indra Jatra, she appears in a chariot procession through the city, blessing the crowds.

It is both—Indra Jatra blends Hindu and Newar Buddhist traditions, making it a unique example of Kathmandu’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage.

The tour usually spans 3 to 5 days, covering the main rituals, processions, and opportunities for guided cultural sightseeing around the Kathmandu Valley.

You’ll stay in comfortable hotels or heritage-style lodges near the celebration areas, offering easy access to Durbar Square and key festival events.
